Conditions apply

While the satellite rights of SRK-starrer Chennai Express have gone for Rs 48 crore, the producers stand to benefit even further if their movie makes more than Rs 100 crore at the box-office.

Seems there's a lot riding on whether a film makes it to the Rs 100 crore club or not. Especially when the movie in question is the forthcoming Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, Chennai Express.

News is an up-and-coming channel called End Films has bought the satellite rights of Chennai Express for Rs 48 crore, and will cough up more than the said amount if the film crosses the Rs 100 crore mark. Slabs having been set for various points north of Rs 100 crore. Interestingly, this is the first time ever that a film's satellite rights have been sold with such a pre-condition. Possibly, the producers of the film - UTV and Shah Rukh - were looking for an even higher price.
Jayantilal Gada, CMD of Pen India, the agency that acquires satellite rights for Zee and now End Films, confirmed the purchase and said: "I think it's a win-win situation for both the producers and the channel," adding, "The new channel will telecast a lot many movies in due course. We plan to have a library of at least 10 films to begin with."

Said leading distributor Sunil Wadhwa: "I think it's a fantastic deal. Shah Rukh and UTV will definitely achieve their targets as far as the sale of satellite rights is concerned. The film is definitely going to cross Rs 100 crore."

Meanwhile, a source revealed: "Shah Rukh has been involved with every area of the film's marketing and branding. It was made on a huge budget. Obviously, as a producer, he wants to make as much money through pre-release distribution avenues. But he had to settle for Rs 48 crore. The film had been presented to a few channels prior to the settled deal."

Emraan, Vidya complete hattrick

 MEANWHILE..

However, Mukesh's remake of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, which was announced amidst much fanfare as a co-production between Vishesh Films and T-Series, has been put on the backburner.

Buoyed by the success of Aashiqui 2, T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar and Mukesh Bhatt of Vishesh Films had declared they would remake Mahesh Bhatt's 1991 blockbuster starring Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt. However, a fall out between them over financial matters ultimately led to the co-production being put on hold.
Mohit Suri's film their third after The Dirty Picture and Ghanchakkar.

This newspaper had earlier reported that Vishesh Films was in discussions with Emraan Hashmi to star in their next opposite Vidya Balan, to be directed by Mohit Suri (June 25).

We've now learnt that Emraan has signed the film as of yesterday. If all goes well, this yet-untitled movie will be Emraan and Vidya's third outing together, after The Dirty Picture and Ghanchakkar.

When contacted, Mukesh Bhatt confirmed the news and said, "I am sure people would love to see Vidya and Emraan sharing screen space once again. We will start the film very soon."

Born in the purple: Lolo’s little steps

At seventeen, Lolo was but the second girl from the Kapoor clan to set foot on the silver screen after Shashi Kapoor's daughter Sanjana. And she made quite an impression with a string of commercial hits in the 90s, followed by a couple of critically acclaimed films in 2000 and 2001.

After tying the knot with industrialist Sunjay Kapur in 2003, Lolo took a long break from films. Last year, she made a comeback of sorts with Vikram Bhatt's Dangerous Ishhq but the film garnered mixed reviews.
The older of Randhir and Babita Kapoor's two daughters - Karisma Kapoor - derives her nickname Lolo from Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida.

Lolo's tryst with showbiz began way before her acting debut in the early 90s, when as a child, she would often accompany her parents to film premieres and related events.

The picture captured by lensman Shyam Aurangabadkar at one such do has mommy Babita giving baby Lolo an affectionate peck even as daddy Randhir looks on dotingly.

Man poses as Mahesh Bhatt, takes actress for a ride

A person claiming to be Mahesh Bhatt had been chatting up Deepshikha on a social networking website and nearly succeeded in convincing her to send him her portfolio pictures.

Throughout the chat, the impostor persisted in addressing the actress as 'bachcha', much like Bhatt does when talking to people around him. He even claimed that a person named Aziz from Bhatt's office would get in touch with her for the auditions of Bhatt's next film.
It wasn't before a while that Deepshikha sensed something fishy about the conversation and contacted Bhatt yesterday. That's when they both realised the whole thing was a hoax. Deepshikha said: "Though the man claimed he was abroad, which is why he had some free time, I kept wondering how come Bhatt Sahab, who is a very busy man, had all the time in the world to chat with me."

A shocked Bhatt recalled a similar incident when a girl had walked up to him and said she was summoned for an audition. "He suggested I should immediately go to the cops and file a complaint," said Deepshikha.

At the time of going to the press, Deepshikha had filed a complaint at the Oshiwara police station.

Imran Khan's scary rendezvous with Chintuji

When Imran Khan bumped into Rishi Kapoor at a suburban studio, he froze. Here's why.

Remakes may be the flavour of the season but actors too are aware they cannot escape comparisons with the original.

A case in point is Imran Khan, who yesterday evening, while stepping out of BR Studios (Juhu) after wrapping up some dubbing patchwork for his next, Milan Luthria's Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobara, saw Rishi Kapoor approaching the building, and froze.
Almost instantaneously, he started searching for places to hide. Reason being ever since he'd shot for the Tayyab Ali song in OUATIMD, the actor was apprehensive about how Rishi Kapoor, who featured in the original number along with wife Neetu, would react to his performance.

Better sense prevailed, and Imran decided to approach the senior actor. What unfolded next was something Imran had never imagined.

Rishi and he started having a polite conversation and Imran complimented the snior actor on his powerful performance as the dreaded don in D-Day.

Rishi then mentioned the Tayyab Ali song and Imran immediately started apologising. At that point, Rishi said something that had Imran smiling all day.

Much to Imran's relief, Rishi was all praises for the new number and even went on to say that he'd never imagined his hit song from Amar Akbar Anthony would be re-engineered in such a peppy manner.

When contacted, Imran sounded surprised but confirmed the story and said: "I was worried about Chintuji's reaction. Tayyab Ali is an iconic song and reworking that comes with a lot of responsibility. To my relief, he likes the song."

Added the actor, "I cant wait to tell this to Milan. His compliment means a lot to me as I can't ask for a better stamp of validation."

Sallu ties up with old chums

Salman co-producing a film with Himesh comes as a surprise to many. Although, Himesh started off as a music composer in 1998 with Salman's Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya and followed it up with Hello Brother (1999), Tere Naam (2003) and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005), their alliance went on to hit a rough patch. And it was not until six years later that the two buried the hatchet for Bodyguard (2011).

Salman has recently got Himesh on board as a music composer for his upcoming film Kick. Produced and directed by Sajid Nadiadwala, the film will release next year. Now, by joining hands with Himesh to coproduce a film, Salman definitely is taking the association to the next level.

According to sources, the highlight of Issar's film will be its elaborate action scenes. Issar had directed Salman in Garv: Pride and Honour, way back in 2004 and has been recently spotted on the sets of Bigg Boss 7.

Both these films will go on floors next year.

Meanwhile, after Sooraj was arrested (and later released on bail) for allegedly abetting the suicide of his actress girlfriend Jiah Khan, there were speculations that he might no longer be part of Salman's maiden production - the remake of Subhash Ghai's 1983 blockbuster, Hero.

However, Salman put a lid on such rumours and confirmed to Mirror (July 4, 2013) that he will launch Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab's son along with Suniel Shetty's daughter Athiya. Tentatively titled The Hero, the first film of Salman's stable will go on floors in November.
The actor's production house is gearing up for two more films, even before its maiden venture goes on floors.

Salman Khan Productions has got two more films in the pipeline after it puts the Sooraj Pancholi-Aathiya starrer on floors.

Salman's production house will not only co-produce the remake of Punjabi blockbuster Jatt & Juliet (2012) along with Himesh Reshammiya's H R Musik, but it will produce a period film, which will be directed Puneet Issar (who was recently in news when his wife whacked a man at a suburban movie hall for not standing up for the National Anthem). According to a source, Salman will play the lead in Issar's film, while the remake will have a newcomer (not his new protege Sooraj).

It is Kat, not PeeCee

Not so long ago, Kabir had a word with Saif to adjust his dates with Katrina, who in turn, got in touch to check the status on Bang Bang. Much to Katrina's delight, she finally had things falling in place with respect to her two films.

It is learnt that Kabir's film is a thriller to be shot in London, USA, Kashmir and Punjab. He has written the script and Pritam Chakraborty will score the film's music.

The movie, scheduled to go on floors this October, will see Katrina and Saif pairing for the second time, the first being Abbas Mustan's Race 2.

According a source close to Nadiadwala, Katrina will be seen in a new avatar in the film. Kabir was heard telling his friends that Katrina's look in his next will be vastly different from her look in his last film, Ek Tha Tiger. In the past, Katrina has worked with Kabir in Kabul Express.
Katrina Kaif has beaten Priyanka Chopra in the race to bag a role in Kabir Khan's next.

It's official. Katrina Kaif will star opposite Saif Ali Khan in Kabir Khan's next (yet untitled), produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The actress has given her nod of consent to Kabir last night.

While this comes as a dampener for Priyanka Chopra, who was a close contender in the race for the role, sources close to the development say Katrina was always Kabir's first choice for Nadiadwala's film. Just that first, Bang Bang where she stars opposite Hrithik Roshan went for a toss with Hrithik's brain surgery and next, Saif got too busy with his other projects.

A source revealed: "Katrina's problem was she had her dates messed up because her film with Hrithik, Bang Bang, got delayed due to his accident. Another hitch, which came up only recently was that Saif got too tied up with Bullet Raja, Humshakal and Happy Ending. That's really when Kabir started thinking of getting Priyanka on board."

While Saif had been finalised as lead actor around three months ago, Katrina and Priyanka were vying for the role of leading lady.

Baldwin refuses Marvel villain role

Alec Baldwin had revealed that he returned down a villainous role in a Marvel superhero movie because his wife is due to give birth. The actor did not mention the movie he was offered, reported a website.
"I have been offered a role in a superhero movie, but I won't mention which one. I don't want to undo somebody because they hired someone else to do it. But they asked me to play a villain in one of these Marvel Comics movies.
"I wasn't available. They wanted me to work a certain time, and because of my wife's pregnancy, I had to turn down two films this summer that I wanted to do," he said. While Baldwin is reluctant to name the role he declined, it's possible the actor was approached for James Gunns' intergalactic movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, which is currently being filmed in England. Baldwin will next be seen starring alongside actress Cate Blanchett in Woody Allen's critically acclaimed drama, Blue Jasmine.

Sound of Music costumes auctioned for $ 1.3 million

A selection of costumes from Julie Andrew's classic movie The Sound Of Music has sold at an auction in California for USD 1.3 million.
The garments included the main outfit worn by the Hollywood legend's character Maria, which was described in the auction handbook as "a heavy brown homespun Austrian-style dress with a wheat-coloured homespun blouse".
Floral lederhosen (a type of dress) worn by cast who played the Von Trapp children also wet under the hammer at the Profiles in History auction, reported a website.
Another highlight was a costume worn by late actor James Gandolfini in his final scene of The Sopranos, which sold for USD 22,000. The outfit was placed under auction before Gandolfini passed away in Italy last month. A painting of the plantation building Tara from Gone With The Wind, used in the 1939 film's opening sequence, fetched USD 270,000, and a diving helmet from the 1954 movie 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea sold for USD 75,000.

Arnie to reprise his Conan act

But the further two movies look to be on the cards if the sequel to 1982's Conan the Barbarian is a success, according to Fredrik Malmberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Paradox Entertainment, reported afilm magazine. "We have a great story. Everyone loves it. This is a role that's perfect for him and he's very involved with the whole team. It's the best team they have. Arnold has been very instrumental to briging this together saying, 'We gotta make a good Conan'," Malmberg said.

"I think if we do this right, we can do two more Conan movies right after. I think Game of Thrones also shows a huge interest in fantasy. I'm psyched about it," he added.

Schwarzenegger has teamed up with Universal for the forthcoming film, which will see the iconic character go into battle once again after growing bored of being king.
Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger will reportedly star in the Legend of Conantrilogy if the first movie is a success. The 65-year-old actor is to reprise his role of the titular warrior in a forthcoming film.

When Ayushmann called the shots

The actor went behind the camera for a few scenes as Shoojit Sircar's assistant on his upcoming film.

As lead actor in Shoojit Sircar's Vicky Donor, Ayushmann Khurrana had expressed a desire to assist him as director on his next project, and Shoojit had promised to comply.

Reports however suggest that while Ayushmann's dream may have come true, it is so only in passing.

When Shoojit's Madras Cafe went on floors, the director kept his word and asked Ayushmann to join the crew as Assistant Director. Ayushmann however couldn't take up the assignment as he was busy with his acting commitments.
So, instead of coming on board as AD for the entire duration of the shoot, the actor instead flew down to Cochi for ten days to assist Shoojit on a crucial hospital scene featuring John Abraham and Siddharth Basu.

When contacted, Shoojit confirmed the news and said: "Ayushmann had told me during Vicky Donor that if the film tanked and he didn't get any work thereafter, he would assist me. But the film worked and he became a star. However, to get a better hang of direction, he did join us for ten days' time and proved to be a talented assistant," he laughs.

On his part, Ayushmann said: "I wish I could be there for all 40 days of the shoot. Usually, actors start out as AD's and then become stars. My story is the other way round. It was a terrific learning experience going behind the camera. Shoojit has a fabulous set up and he doesn't do too many retakes. It was fascinating to see actors from a different point of view." He adds,"I hope this experience results in making me a better actor."

Hrithik steps out

For the first time since he underwent surgery, Hrithik Roshan, who has been adviced bedrest stepped out of his Juhu house to monitor the postproduction of his upcoming film Krrish 3, which is underway at a studio in Andheri.

As reported earlier by this newspaper, the actor has been adviced by the doctors not to report for any film shooting till mid-November.

25 films to fight it out this weekend

This, after the plexes bled last weekend with a volley of 11 films hitting the screens.

As many as 11 films hit the theatres last week and with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, D-Day, Ramaiya Vastavaiya and Ship of Theseus continuing their run, at present, there are effectively 16 films vying to capture audience and screen space. And things are about to get worse with nine more films releasing this Friday.

According to an industry insider, the only notable film among the upcoming films is Rabba Main Kya Karoon, which stars Arshad Warsi. Director of the film, Amrit Sagar, whose 2007 film 1971 won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, said: " These days you can hardly expect a solo run. We have faith in our film." With Chennai Express releasing a week later, it will be interesting to see if any of these 25 films hold their grounds and put up a fight with the SRK-starrer.  "If even a single show of each of these releases is retained, we would have an staggering 25 films jostling for space in the multiplexes. That is an unheard of figure in recent times," says a veteran filmmaker.

The new releases in question are Rabba Main Kya Karoon, B.A. Pass, Calapor, Chor Chor Super Chor, Love In Bombay, Prague and Bhadaas, and the dubbed version of Kannada hit, Bachchan and the American supernatural horror flick The Conjuring. The films released on July 26 include five Hindi -Bajatey Raho, Issaq, Luv U Soniyo, Nasha and Main Hoon Surya Singham II; two Marathi - Time OK Please and Shrimanth Damodar Pant, three Tamil - Ainthu Ainthu, Sonapuri Yadhu, Patta Thir Yaanai, one Punjabi-Best Of Luck and one English — The Wolverine.

The multiplex officials are racking their brains to allot slots to thefilms and Grirsh Wankhade, GM, Marketing, PVR and Cinemax, said: "We don't give preferential treatment to any film. It is not the first time so many films are releasing together. We will try to give one or two shows to each. Films like Bhaag Milkha, The Wolverine and the Marathi film Duniyadari will continue to enjoy a good run."

However, it is not without reason that the theatres are bombarded with so many new releases. Anand Vishal, Head of Operations and Sales of Fun Cinemas, explained: "August is flooded with big releases like Chennai Express, Satyagraha, Madras Cafe and Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara. It is more wise to release these films before the biggies clash at the box office."

Girish Johar, a leading distributor said: "Today's audience is very smart. With so many options available, they will pick what excites them the most."

Jai and Veeru to reunite in Sholay 3D

Apparently, with the 1975 film having released the same day, August 15 was initially locked as the date the 3D version would hit theatres. But with several big-ticket movies releasing that day, the 3D release was postponed to September 13 in a bid to coincide with the birth anniversary of Sholay's producer, GP Sippy. Again, technical glitches and the absence of a vacant slot forced a further delay to sometime in October.

With the plan in place, the makers are now in the process of booking a suburban multiplex for the event that will see Bollywood legends under the same roof after a yawning gap.

Said Gada: "We don't want to compete with any film. We will show the film to exhibitors and distributors so that they know how big the project is and give us a good run."
The makers are planning a grand premiere that will see the surviving members of the cast under one roof after 38 years.

With the 3D version of Ramesh Sippy's 1975 classic Sholay almost complete, the makers are planning a lavish premiere that will see the original cast reunite after 38 years.

Producer Jayantilal Gada and the Sippy brothers - Sascha, Shaan and Shehzad have decided to invite veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini as well as scriptwriter duo Salim-Javed to the do, which is most likely to take place in October.

When contacted, Gada confirmed the news and said: "We will surely have a mega celebration. The industry has already extended a lot of support, and come October, we will celebrate with the entire cast and the rest of the film fraternity to mark the return of the greatest film ever made."

When Deepika kept Shah Rukh waiting

It is not rare for Shah Rukh Khan to keep people waiting. However, he found himself at the receiving end last Monday when his Chennai Express co-star, Deepika Padukone, kept him waiting for a good four-and-half hours on the sets of a TV show. The duo was shooting a promotional campaign for their upcoming film at Mehboob Studios.

According to a source, SRK walked in 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time. But, it wasn't until 9 pm that his leading lady graced the sets. The actress didn't even bother to provide any explanation for the delay.

Although, the shoot finally started, it was a quick wrap as both the actors refused to shoot beyond 9.30pm, as they had to rush to the airport to catch a flight for London.

However, the day was not over yet for the producers of the show. After checking the footage, they realised that there were many glitches. When they approached the stars, much to their relief, both confirmed that they will come back and re-shoot for the show.

But, Mirror has learnt that the producers will have to wait for no less than seven to eight days. After London, SRK and Deepika's promotional exercise will extend to Dubai and Chennai.

The ABCD of RK’s life

In an interview with Filmfare, Rishi Kapoor claims that several women drop by the house to meet RK, unaware of each other's visits.

He was recently photographed strolling around a Spanish beach with current flame, Katrina Kaif. While the pictures (first published by Stardust) have been doing the rounds online and elsewhere, it seems that Ranbir is living the life of the quintessential superstar. On top in the league of his generation of actors, RK Jr is young, rich and successful. And if a recent revelation by his father is to be believed, he's got the women as well.

When Filmfare asked Rishi Kapoor for his comment on his son's Casanova ways, he had a revelatory thing to say. "He's successful. Any girl would like to date him. Abhi nahi karega toh kab meri umar mein aakey karega?" he said, and then dropped the bomb. "He's seeing everyone because I keep seeing A B C and D in the house. But I don't think that A knows about B and C knows about D. The staff knows and I know. I'm still the boss of the house. The news reaches my ears."

Well, considering the past affairs RK Jr has had, it may not be the most difficult thing to guess the A, B, C and the D in Ranbir's life.

NOW RANBIR'S CAR'S A ROCKSTAR

Not content with playing the Rockstar in Imtiaz Ali's 2011 film, Ranbir Kapoor will now drive a car by the same name in his next - Abhinav Kashyap's Besharam.

The vehicle forms an integral part of Ranbir's character in the film, and not without reason, for Ranbir is passionate about cars in real life as well.

Apparently, Abhinav was keen that the car have a persona of its own and thought of multiple names for it.

A brainstorming session first yielded Besharam as a possible title how-ever it was later decided to go with Rockstar.

The four-wheeler has been shot in a way that its name appears prominently on the screen.

Sonam on Depp’s ship

The makers of the franchise reportedly contacted a celebrity management company, who reached out to Anil Kapoor, who in turn primed his daughter for the big test.

The audition was held last week in a studio in Andheri. A source close to the development said, "Sonam breezed through the auditions. The outcome is awaited."

Sources confirmed to Mirror that Sonam even had a long videoconference with representatives from the makers, Walt Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer. The casting agents of the film in question were also present during her acid test.
The actress has auditioned for a plum role in the next Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Her father is enjoying a new surge in his professional life thanks to his foray into Hollywood. And after gracing several international fashion events and endorsing luxury brands, Sonam Kapoor gets her first real taste of Hollywood. Even if it is just an appetiser.

Mirror has learnt that the actress, who is enjoying her time in the sun with the success of Ranjhanaa and Bhaag Milka Bhaag, recently auditioned for a dream role. The 24-year -old is apparently in the reckoning for the fifth installment of the hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, top lined by Johnny Depp.

The fifth installment of the series is slated to go on floors in 2015. While it is too early to speculate on Sonam's possible role in the film, it would be interesting to see of she gets to romance one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

The sale, put on by Profiles in History, has nearly 4,000 unpublished photos of the stunning actress by famed photographer Milton Greene.
These intimate photographs are expected to fetch thousands of dollars, with the individual lots of Monroe photos likely to fetch between 1,000 dollars to 15,000 dollars, a leading daily reported.

Diane Lane to play Hillary in TV series

The producers are yet to find an actor to play former President Bill Clinton in the fourhour long series.

"President Clinton, we haven't cast yet. We literally just closed the deals (for the show) and haven't written the script. All that will be determined," NBC President Bob Greenblatt said.

Hillary's life story has been attracting Hollywood's attention for some time. Rodham, a script by Young II Kim from South Korea, features in Hollywood's all important The Black List. Kim's script is about a 20-something Hillary at the beginning of her career and her romance with Clinton.

An annual poll of nearly 300 film executives decide their favourite scripts in the Black List. Films that have made it to the list are The Social Network and The King's Speech.Unfaithful star Diane Lane is all set to portray former US First Lady and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, in a new TV mini-series.

Lane will take on the title role in the forthcoming NBC network show Hillary. Director Courtney Hunt will document Mrs Clinton's life as a wife, mother, politician and cabinet member from 1998 to the present in the script, a leading website reported.

Not quite the right Kick

Reportedly, the shooting of the sequence which involved Hooda had to be stopped as the UK authorities weren't happy with the damage. It wasn't confirmed if Hooda was behind the wheel when the incident occurred.

The source added: "The shooting had to be stopped till the authorities did the entire inspection of the losses.. There was lot of chaos. "

Till the time of going to the press, no injuries had been reported from the set .The lead pair of the film, Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez, was not present on the sets. Salman plans to join the schedule next week.

Nadiadwala remained unavailable for a comment.
A car chase sequence went out of control during the shoot of the film, damaging property in Glasgow.

Sajid Nadiadwala's directorial debut Kick got off to a rough start when an action sequence involving Randeep Hooda went dangerously out of control. The scene featured a car chase which didn't go as planned, crashing into the compound walls on the streets of Glasgow.

A source told Mirror, "It was the second day of the shoot and everyone was excited about the high intensity action sequence. However, the timing wasn't co-ordinated well, and that's the reason the car rolled out of control."

‘No guy asked me out in college’

Any anecdotes you recall from your Manchester days?

I moonlighted as team leader for the catering department of the football club, Manchester United. I had absolutely no interest in football and many a times, David Beckham would pass by and I wouldn't recognise him at all. It was only after my Brit friends pointed out that I learnt about him. All of them were jealous as I had exclusive access to the stadiums where matches were played but never made any use of it.

Do you enjoy going to the gym or does it feel like a chore?

It's the worst thing in the world to do. I'm a shameless foodie, and cannot resist pizzas to save my life. Because of which, I used to be really fat. But because of the profession I'm in, I've been told to avoid such indulgences. And still, I don't work out because I'm running all the time on the sets and that keeps my weight in check.

What's the cheesiest pick-up line a guy has used on you?

Honestly, nobody has ever used any kind of pick-up line on me, cheesy or smart. In college, I was quite plump and nobody ever asked me out. Now that I've entered films, it is all the more difficult as people are conscious before asking an actress out for a date.

What draws you towards a man instantly?

The way they smell and a great sense of humour. If a man smells good, I automatically want to talk to him, but then he needs to be funny as well.
Parineeti Chopra on her student life and matters of the heart.

As holder of a triple honours degree in Business, Finance and Economics, do you regret giving up investment banking to pursue acting? What are you other interests?

I was brilliant in studies. I topped in Economics in my twelfth grade. When I passed out of the Manchester Business School, recession had struck and people were getting laid off more than being recruited. I don't regret not being an investment banker, because I already did a brief stint at companies like HSBC and JP Morgan. Besides, being on a film set is much more enjoyable than     pursuing finance. Academics apart, I could never pull off any kind of sport. But I always represented my school in cultural activities, be it musicals, the choir or debate competitions. I was also the head girl in school and would never bunk classes but catch other kids who played truant. I learnt music for six years and can play the harmonium and the tanpura.

Run off the mill

From a runaway kid to acting in a Spanish film, Manish Gray recounts his unique journey.

From a nine-year-old who ran away from his home to a production assistant on Spanish director David Blanco's film Indian Way, Manish Gray's story is the stuff movies are made of.

Born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, to a homemaker mother and theatre artiste father, Manish left home as a child because he felt unappreciated.

While on a Delhi-bound train, he was sedated and landed in a UP village, where goons forced him to work in a sweets factory. "Every night, I thought of ways to escape that hell," recalls Manish. One night, he escaped to the nearest railway station, where he caught the first train to Delhi. He was spotted by an NGO, which gave him shelter but he disliked it as 'they wouldn't let him explore'.

He decided to return home but as luck would have it, boarded the wrong train and ended up hungry and penniless on the streets of Mumbai. What happened next changed the course of Manish's life. A social worker from the Don Bosco shelter spotted him at Churchgate station and took him under his wing.

Manish was 11 years old and spent the next five years under the loving care of the fathers and nuns at the shelter.

"We were encouraged to study and pursue sports. I had a natural talent for hockey and soon, I was the captain of the under-16 team," says Manish, who also participated in many dance events. At one such gig, he performed to a number from Krrish, in front of an audience that included Hrithik Roshan and Boman Irani. While Hrithik joined him briefly on the stage, Boman's speech inspired Manish to explore the actor within him.

"Boman said everybody is born with a talent. The trick is to discover it and chase it till you've made it. I was doing well in hockey, but there was no future. Acting on the other hand, allured me," he says about the speech that left a deep imprint on his mind.

Manish never took Boman's help but a common friend introduced him to Scottish script writer Martial Vout, who put him through to filmmaker Nilesh Malhotra, who after rigorous auditions, cast him in his 100 minute film Hanki Panki that premiered at the Cannes film fest. Later, Vout even cast Manish in an international ad film.

One thing led to the other and as things stand today, Manish (21) is set to appear in Blanco's Indian Way, a tale of two friends separated by the Tsunami. Blanco has also asked him to be the production assistant on the film. "I love this job. I'm working on my health and improving my dancing skills. My dream is to act in an Anurag Kashyap and a Madhur Bhandarkar film," he rounds off.

Shabana joins Anil’s 24

A source close to the development told Mirror that it was Anil's long-standing rapport with the actress that helped in convincing her to make time for his show. "Anil had Shabana in his mind for a role in his TV series since a very long time. Since the two actors have always kept in touch, Anil eventually managed to convince the veteran actress to join the cast."

Despite suffering from a shoulder injury, Shabana sounded extremely excited on hearing the narration from Anil's end and is set to play the part, shooting of which will start in a week's time.

Shabana and Anil have previously worked on multiple projects together like Ek Baar Kaho and Rakhwala back in the 80's and with 24, the two will be teaming up after a long gap of two decades.
Will play a pivotal role in the Indian version of the hit American TV series.

Anil Kapoor's ambitious retelling of the hit American show, 24 has just got a surprise entrant. From what a very reliable source tells Mirror, Shabana Azmi will make her television debut. She has been cast in the pivotal role of an Anti Terrorism Unit officer. Her part is as significant as Anil Kapoor, who reprises the role of Jack Bauer in the show's Indian version.

Known for her hard-hitting performances on celluloid, it will be interesting to see Shabana on the small screen.

Heart of darkness

"I never thought the campaign would assume such proportions," says the actress, seated at her Worli apartment that's resonating with the music of wind chimes and the pitter-patter of her three-year-old son Vihaan.

This maybe one of the many causes the award winning actress-filmmaker and activist has lent her name to, but it is also the closest to her heart. And Nandita speaks from her own experience with the film industry, notorious for for its obsession with fair skin.

"Whenever I have to play a middle-class or upper middle class woman, I am told: 'I know you don't like being white or fair but can you make your skin a little lighter? The rural, lower class women are dark but now that you playing an educated professional....' Do all educated people have to be fair complexioned?" The actress rounds her kohl-lined eyes in disbelief and adds, "If you want me for a role and want me to change my skin tone, then sorry, wrong casting!"

The entertainment industry has pushed women to undergo cosmetic procedures to enhance skin tones, says Nandita. "I know of darker women who eventually became 20 shades lighter. I understand the pressure. I don't blame them," she says. We think of the likes of Bipasha Basu, Chitrangda Singh to name just a few, even if Nandita refuses to name them.

She however speaks about Smita Patil. "I am close to her sister and I know there were instances when she came home in tears because of being subjected to this discrimination. If you look at her more mainstream films and the independent art films, you will notice a difference in her skin colour."

The actress says the industry is kinder to men. "Actresses who are wonderful at their work, but look unconventional, have struggled to make it. Men who are not conventionally good looking, had to try hard as well, but they still managed to be the hero in films," she points out, refusing to name names. "Do we want actors or lookers?" she shoots back.

The obsession with fairskinned women is just symptomatic of a deeper and more sinister problem, cautions Nandita. "It is disrespect for women which comes out in various ways... this is just one of them," she says, adding, "and it cuts across class."

She recounts her days of social work in an impoverished Orissa village, where women did not even have access to potable water or electricity but every home had a tube of fairness cream that was well past its expiryw date. "Even the educated, much-travelled women would seem to have a lot of confidence but suffer from low selfesteem, what with the whole world telling them they are not good enough."

Though the online campaign against fairness products has now trained its sights on a brand endorsed by Shah Rukh Khan, Nandita says she does not want to target any individual or entity, because the "the issue is much larger."

"Stars endorse a lot of products they never use. Women have been endorsing fairness creams for years. That is their call," she reasons.

"We can't blame history or marketing forces... It is about the mindset of a society. The enemy is not the star or the brand that advocates the product, but in our own heads," she concludes.
Nandita Das, the face of a campaign against fairness creams, tells us why we should stop calling her 'dusky'.

An online movement against fairness products has found a star in Nandita Das, who is perhaps the only actress to have resolutely refused to change her skin tone despite the push and pull of the entertainment industry. The actress, who resents the tag of 'dusky' ("Don't add an adjective to make me feel different", she says) is exhorting women to 'Stay Unfair, Stay Beautiful' and her mailbox is jammed with heart-rending accounts of dark complexioned women, who want her to counsel them, their families while others thank her for validating something most women have always known but never acknowledged - that your skin tone shoudl not define who you are.

Johnny Depp may hang his acting boots soon

The Pirates star is planning to devote time to making wine and playing the guitar

The 50-year-old feels he has over-worked in recent years and wants to slow down following decades devoted to films like the Pirates of the Carribbean and its sequels and Tim Burton hits like Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland.
In a interview with a British news channel, the actor said: "At a certain point, you start thinking and when you add up the amount of dialogue you say per year and you realise you've said written words more than you've had a chance to say your own words that becomes and insane option.
"Are there quieter things I wouldn't mind doing? Yes, I wouldn't mind that. "I wouldn't say I am dropping out any second but I would say it's not too far away."
This is the first time Depp has directly admitted his acting days are coming to an end. He was speaking whilst promoting The Lone Ranger, a remake of the classic adventure with Depp as Native american spirit warrior Tonto and Armie Hammer in the title role.
When pushed if he would retire before a rumoured Alice In Wonderland 2 movie and a fifth pirates of the Caribbean film, he laughed before adding: "No, I think we're alright in those categories."
Depp appears to be trying to prepare his millions of fans for a period where he reduces his workload and then within a few years, devotes his time on his other interests, which include playing the guitar and making wine.
He is also now single, having announced a split from Vanessa Paradis, the mother of his two children, last summer.
In an interview with a music magazine in June, he hinted at slowing down: "I can't say that I'd want to be doing this for another 10 years."
He went on to say he looked forward to "going somewhere where you don't have to be on the run, or sneak in through the kitchen or the underground labyrinth of the hotel".
Asked about her interview with Depp, the interview said: "I think his fans will be spooked when he says he might be dropping out of making movies. He's made some brilliant and hugely successful films and he always brings a quirky Depp charm to them. Johnny Depp is charming and funny and friendly - and his fans will hope he continues making his movies for a long while to come."

Love is in the air for Cumberbatch

You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out that Benedict Cumberbatch's love life is really hotting up.
The actor was sunning himself in Ibiza as Russian model Katia Elizarova cuddled up to him in a skimpy bikini. While they relaxed by the pool, the Sherlock star lovingly stroked 26-year-old Katia's arm.
The couple were on the Spanish party island for the wedding of pals Seth Cummings and Rob Rinder.
Benedict, 37, who is filming a new Sherlock series, officiated at the ceremony. Before the big day he said: "Of course, I'm going to make a joke after it if it goes well - 'I do weddings. Next will be children's parties and bat mitzvahs'."
The actor and 5ft 9in Katia - a former ballerina - were later seen sharing a kiss.
Benedict played down claims they were dating in 2012, but dressed in smart black trousers and a white shirt at the reception, he seemed happy to show off his lady.
Katia is the latest in a line of beauties he is said to have dated since his 12-year relationship with actress Olivia Poulet ended in 2011. He was previously linked to actress Liv Tyler, furniture designer Anna James and heiress Lydia Heart.

Action director brothers involved in blood feud

Due to the blows suffered, an injured Mahindra was rushed to a local hospital where he was administered medical assistance. Although what led to this dispute is not clear, the step-brothers have been embroiled in a long-winding battle over their father's property, and this is apparently what triggered Saturday morning's incident.
The two are also members of the Fighter's association, and the duo are usually at loggerheads over supremacy issues at the association-.When contacted, Mahindra claimed, "Tinu barged into my house and started beating me up. He abused my wife and wanted to beat my son, but then I hit him back as I had no option." However, when contacted, Tinu had a different version of the story. He said as the chairperson of the housing society, objected to certain encroachments by Mahindra, and it was Mahindra who beat him firstOn Saturday morning, renowned stunt director Tinu Verma allegedly barged into his step-brother Mahindra Verma's Andheri residence and beat him up. Mahindra also claims that after beating him up, Tinu proceeded to abuse his wife, and wanted to beat their son up. At this point, Mahindra gathered himself and put up a tough fight driving Tinu out of his house. Tinu and Mahindra are the residents of the same housing complex.

Mahindra dashed off to the Amboli police station, however, a case against Tinnu wasn't registered. A senior cop from Amboli police station told us, "Mahindra did come to complaint. But it is their family matter."

I feel silly to justify why I am doing the film: Deepika Padukone

Dippy talks about Chennai Express, her DDLJ moment, and the journey from flops to fame

Deepika Padukone is on a roll with a clutch of successful films behind her and others like Chennai Express just a fortnight away from hitting the screens. Mirror gets into a brief conversation with the actress ahead of her Eid release. Excerpts...

How did the conversation go with Shah Rukh Khan and Rohit Shetty when you agreed to do Chennai Express?

There was no conversation whatsoever. I was offered the film, and said, 'Sure, I would love to be a part of it'. When Rohit and his team narrated the script to me, I was in splits.

Rohit's films aren't really known for their leading ladies doing anything substantial. Weren't you worried?

Rohit's other films have largely been ensemble affairs but in the case of Chennai Express, the girl's part is quite strong and integral to the movie. In fact, I feel silly to even justify why I am doing the film.

In Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, it was Shah Rukh who wooed Kajol during their first train journey but in Chennai Express, we hear the reverse is happening with you taking him for a ride.

To begin with, it's a classic DDLJ moment for Shah Rukh and I in the film (smiles). After having watched the movie as a 10-yearold, there I was, reliving the moment with my very own Rahul...

With Shah Rukh and you in the lead and Rohit at the helm of affairs, it is expected this Eid will bring in more than Rs 100 crore for Chennai Express. Have you set any targets for yourself?

I won't say I don't want a Rs 100 crore film. Good numbers make everyone happy. As for the final collections, it is for Rohit, Shah Rukh and UTV to be worried about (smiles).

For someone who had back-toback flops a couple of years ago to be now considered a contender in the Rs 100 crore race, it's some journey, isn't it?

Yes, you do celebrate it for a while but then move on. Of course, I have worked hard to get where I am. It hasn't happened by chance.

Bhiku Mhatre’s fight with vertigo

Manoj Bajpai talks about his fear of heights, which he first faced in Satya, a film that changed the course of his career

“The light was going; I was going berserk and had forgotten all my lines. Once it was canned, Anurag Kashyap and I sat down for a smoke and after “pack-up” went to my house and got drunk,” narrates the actor.

He admits he still gets vertigo attacks. “Satya was my big break, a film with Ram Gopal Varma. I didn’t want to mess up. Playing Bhiku Mhatre was a 24 x 7 job — I never left Bhiku alone.

There were sufficient indications that something good was happening; that even if Satya didn’t work, I’d be appreciated as an actor,” says Manoj. He won the National Award for Best Supporting Actor and swept trophies at other award functions as well. The realisation of just how big Bhiku Mhatre was, sunk in when he went to Pune post the film’s release.

The road from the airport to the venue was lined with people chanting his name. “The stage collapsed because everyone wanted to touch me and clambered on it,” he laughs. “I’m not a Maharashtrian. I had been in Mumbai only for five years, so it was a high to be praised for my Marathi accent and diction.”

Fifteen years later, he still recalls filming the song, Goli maar bheje mein, which was the last to be shot. “The whole crew was drinking alcohol and singing along. It was our wrap-up party on screen.

By the time it was canned, the floor was wet with beer and we were completely sloshed,” he chuckles. Satya 2 is coming up and Manoj wishes his mentor-director RGV best of luck. “I’ll always be grateful to this genius who saw the spark in me and gave me Satya which took me to great heights,” he asserts.
I have a fear of heights... and I’ll never forget standing at the edge of a cliff trying not to look down,” shudders Manoj Bajpai reminiscing about Satya (1998) that put him on the road to success.

He remembers how terrified he and everyone around him was, shouting out to him to look straight. The scene that should have taken thirty minutes stretched to two hours.

Zanjeer remake’s release postponed

The Zanjeer remake has been in the news for one reason or the other ever since it was announced. The last we reported (Mirror, date June 26) was that while decks had been cleared for both the Hindi and Telugu release, late Prakash Mehra’s son Amit Mehra, had been replaced by his brothers Sumeet and Puneet, as producers of the joint venture with Reliance Entertainment and Flying Turtle.

However, just when it looked like the film, starring Ram Charan Teja and Priyanka Chopra, would keep its date with the slated September 6 release, developments in the Hindi and Telugu film industry seem to suggest otherwise.

A source revealed that on Saturday, makers of the Telugu film Yevadu, also starring Ram Charan, postponed the movie by three weeks — from coming Friday to August 21, bringing it too close to Zanjeer 2.0. Said the source: “It will be too much for Ram to have two of his films literally arriving back to back.

And more than just the Hindi version, Ram also has to worry about Zanjeer’s Telugu version —Thoofan. It will be a tall task for distributors and exhibitors to bring two of Ram’s films one after the other.” On the Bollywood front too, with Yash Raj pushing ahead the release of Shuddh Desi Romance, the Zanjeer remake now has direct competition from the Sushant Singh Rajput-Parineeti Chopra starrer.

The source said: “Though that by itself isn’t a threat since Zanjeer is a much bigger film than the Maneesh Sharma-directed movie, it cannot be ignored either. Some rethinking may be required here.”

Director Apoorva Lakhia however sounded confident. “I can only talk about my film. This week, as many as 12 films released all over India. It’s impossible for any film to get a single release unless it features the big four or five actors. Zanjeer is definitely arriving on September 6,” he said.

Akshay Kumar finds an admirer in Al Pacino

The veteran actor who watched the promo of Milan Luthria's next says that it reminded him of his Godfather days

Akki finds an admirer in Al Pacino In a communication to the film's makers, Pacino said: "My friend Barry Navidi showed me a promo for an Indian gangster film with Akshay Kumar. It brought some fond memories back from my Godfather days."

The team of OUATIMDis obviously delighted with the news. When contacted, Akshay said, "A touch of appreciation is always held dearly-- even if it's from the simplest of people like our beloved spot boys. But to have an actor like Al Pacino say such nice things about your work is something else.

I had goose bumps thinking about him watching the promo! I was so humbled, not only as an actor but also as a fan of his work. I pray he enjoys the movie as much as he enjoyed the promo."
Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara (OUATIMD) has apparently caught the eye of Al Pacino, who we hear is pretty impressed with the film -especially with Akshay Kumar's look. Pacino was shown a promo of the film by his business partner Barry Navidi, and it let loose a torrent of memories for the veteran actor.

A source close to the films said: "Al Pacino and Barry Navidi were casually discussing the changing scenario of films. Barry happened to mention OUATIMDwhile mentioning gangster films made in India and showed him the theatrical trailer of the film."

BY GEORGE! SRK DOES A CLOONEY

His character in Farah Khan’s next is inspired by Danny Ocean in the Steven Soderbergh hit Ocean’s 11

Shah Rukh Khan’s character in Happy New Year will have several traits in common with George Clooney’s Danny Ocean in the 2001 film, Ocean’s 11. And this tempts us into looking for more similarities between the other characters in the Farah Khan film and the Steven Soderbergh hit. However, while Ocean's 11 is about a heist, Farah's film is reportedly about a group of inept dancers locked in a competition.

A friend of SRK elaborated on his role in HNY: “He will be very cool with the girls, yet emphatically want to remain single. He will lead the pack, which will comprise of Abhishek Bachchan, Vivaan Shah and Boman Irani. The other guys will follow him, look up to him for directions. Yes, much like Clooney in the Ocean trilogy.”

Mirror has also learnt that Shah Rukh will sport a mature look.  “He will play his age,” the friend added. Mirror had earlier reported, SRK will wear his hair longer than usual for the role.

While other details about SRK’s look are being planned, what with the film just a month away from going on floors, Farah is yet to finalise her leading lady – a Marathi bar dancer.

In fact, a source close to Katrina Kaif confirmed that she is not doing the film, contrary to the news doing the rounds in certain sections of the media.  Another source tells us that SRK has second thoughts about casting TV actress and Sushant Singh Rajput’s girlfriend Ankita Lokhande in the role. Ankita’s name has been propped up as a strong contender. “Ankita is very keen to be a part of Happy New Year, but it is not certain if she will get the role,” added a source.

Dad ends Sallu’s 15-crore legal battle

A source close to Salman said: “The other day, Galani dropped by at Salman’s house and told Salim that he was extremely short of money. Salim heard him out and decided to waive off the outstanding amount. Galani thanked him and left.” When contacted, Salim Khan confirmed the development. “Initially, my son was enraged.

Especially when Galani said that he doesn’t owe him anything. Which is why we had escalated the matter to FWICE. Anyway, it’s over now. Salman is okay with it. I have told Galani that when his financial situation improves in the future, he can always come back and pay up,” Salim said. Galani sounded every bit a relieved man: “Salman and I are friends now. All’s well that ends well.”
The Salman Khan and producer Vijay Galani war is finally over. Thanks to Salman’s father, Salim Khan. Galani owed Rs 15 crore to Salman for the 2010 film Veer and had even dragged the star to court to settle the matter.

But not only was Galani banned by FWICE (Federation Of Western India Cine Employees), it was evident that he was fighting a losing battle at the court. Recently Galani mustered the courage to meet Salim Khan and request him to waive off the dues.

Kirstie Alley back with John Travolta

The actor will guest star in his look Who's Talking co-star's sitcom

Former on-screen couple Kirstie Alley and John Travolta are set to return to small screen with new sitcom Kirstie. The 59-year-old star is thrilled to be reunited with Alley, 62, with whom he starred in 1880s sitcom Look Who's Talking, reported an entertainment daily.
"I'm excited about working with Kirstie again, in addition to such terrific talent on the show. It's always a treat to be surrounded by people you respect so much both personally and professionally," he said.
Alley too expressed her excitement on Travolta's guest turn on the show.
"John Travolta is gonna be on our new show KIRSTIE!! So excited to work together again!!! We are gonna have a BALL!! @tvland!!," tweeted Alley.
In Kristie, Alley plays a Broadway star who will share a fling with Travolta, a guest star on the show. The sitcom is expected to premiere at the end of the year.

Hugh Jackman has sex in Wolverine costume

And it's just as well he has a few sheckles in his bank account, because their antics cost a fortune in ripped bed sheets.

Hugh's wife Deborra-Lee Furness says the costume has some uses outside the bedroom too, including the kitchen, where it's ideal for making salads.

Asked what it's like to live with Hugh in full Wolverine mode, Deborra-Lee said: "Oh my God, it's dreadful! Always with the claws. I'm like, 'Mix the salad. Put them to use, come on!'"

Hugh interrupted: "The sheets we go through..." Let's hope he pops the props in the dishwasher between jobs. Hugh was also asked about his wife's influence on his career and said he gives her all the credit. He said: "I would not be a quarter of the man I am without her."

And if you're not careful with the claws, she'll be lucky to be a quarter of a woman. It's been a good week for the Aussie, cricket aside. The actor's new film, The Wolverine - part of the X-Men series of movies in which he plays the same role - is out tomorrow.

And to celebrate he's just spent a serious amount of cash on a piece of art by Banksy. He bought an oil painting worth more than $1million at the Corinthia Hotel in London last week.

He can't be going through too many sheets if he can still afford that kind of money for a bit of paint on canvas.
Without wanting to sound too camp, Hugh Jackman doesn't struggle in the looks or body department. But, the Aussie actor still keeps his missus interested in the sack - by wearing his full Wolverine outfit, including the blades.

A dangerous business when it comes to tuning the radio upstairs, and I won't even go downstairs.

Small screen’s big battle

Even though Chennai Express is the only film arriving on Eid, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara (OUATIMD), which had postponed its release date to August 15 to ensure a smooth run for Shah Rukh Khan's film, might still steal some thunder from the Eid release. The producer of OUATIMD, Balaji Motion Pictures has planned an elaborate event to celebrate the festive occasion.

While the film's stars are expected to celebrate Eid in Dubai, over the weekend, a special two-hour-long show will be telecast in the prime time slot of a leading entertainment channel. The event will see Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan come together for a show for the first time.

While it is a common trend for stars to promote their films on TV shows, this will be one of the most expensive standalone shows ever made to promote a film.

"It will be an elaborate show featuring comedians, top TV actors and the stars of OUATIMD. The actors will perform on several songs from the film,"a source revealed. Tanuj Garg of Balaji confirmed the news.

‘I’m happy to be the chosen one’

"We are a democracy, and the theatre fraternity has the right to voice its opinion on who should be heading this glorious 55-year-old semi-autonomous theatre training institute. As was expected, multiple opinions were voiced after a selection committee suggested three names, one of them being mine. The ministry deliberated on several opinions and took its decision. I am happy to be the chosen one," he observes.

On the issue of involvement of politicians and political bigwigs in the appointment process, he says: "I am unaware and uninterested in the political pressure on the ministry. I know that different theatre people and cultural personalities from different parts of India thought differently about the ideal candidate for such a prestigious national post. I respect the entire spectrum."

Kendre's appointment is perceived as a victory for Marathi theatre practitioners, who've never led the NSD from the top. "Yes, I will be the first Maharashtrian to hold that honour since the inception of NSD. And yes, I am seen as the face of Marathi theatre in Delhi. Regional aspirations are crucial in the making of a theatre person. But while representing Mumbai and its theatre, I am cognisant of the national nature of the job," he says. According to him, the head requires to retain his regional make up while casting off regional biases that can undermine the flexibility envisioned in the NSD constitution.

Going further, Kendre wants NSD to become a truly 'national' body, which lends a platform to practitioners of all hues and regional languages. He feels representation of regional languages in NSD's projects would further democratise the institution. "It is a national brand, not a Delhi-centric elite body of cultural bigwigs. It should assimilate the creative energies of people in metros as well as in rural pockets. It should relate to practitioners from varied theatre traditions," he says. Kendre aims to make NSD a rightful place not only for performers but also for theatre researchers and archivists who have valuable perspectives to offer.

Significantly, Kendre wants NSD to improve its connect with the common people. "The institute needs to have a livelier mass connect with the cultural life of the country. People in the theatre world, and generally too, should identify with NSD's activities and programmes. Its cultural calendar should not be a niche affair," he stresses, pointing to the possibility of more satellite festivals in smaller cities and towns alongside the annual Bharat Rang Mahotsav.
Marathi theatre artiste Waman Kendre talks to Mirror ahead of his official appointment as director of National School of Drama.

Elated but awaiting the physical order," says Mumbai-based theatre artist Waman Kendre about his appointment as director of the National School of Drama (NSD).

Current head of Mumbai University's Academy of Theatre Arts, director of Marathi plays such as Zulva and Madhyam Vyayog, and an alumnus of NSD, Kendre, is looking forward to taking the reins of India's premier theatre institution. He terms it a 'huge and humbling responsibility' but chooses not to comment on the alleged political lobbying that influenced the NSD appointment by the culture ministry.

Reena Roy returns after 13 yrs

When contacted, Agnidev said, "You've caught me at the wrong time. I am very busy shooting. Can you please call me later? But yes, I have cast Reena and Vinod in my film."

Agnidev, known for taking up controversial issues like the Park Street rape case and the Maharashtra education scam in his films, has cast Reena in a pivotal role in his forthcoming project. The movie deals with the only real-life case of pardon by an Indian Governor; a power explained in Article 161 of the Indian Constitution.

A source close to the film revealed that Agnidev met Reena, who loved the script and didn't take too long to give her nod.

The film also stars Rituparna Sengupta and Karron Mallik in important roles.
She has a pivotal role in Bengali filmmaker Agnidev's next.

Among the popular leading ladies of the '70s and '80s -Reena Roy - who was last seen in 2000 in JP Dutta's Refugee, is planning a comeback.

She will return to the silver screen with Bengali filmmaker Agnidev Chatterjee's yet-untitled next opposite Vinod Khanna, who played Salman and Arbaaz Khan's father in Dabangg 2 (2012).

Anand Gandhi’s next to be a relationship drama

Sohum was chosen for the role after getting a standout reception for his performance in SoT as the stock-broker who gets a kidney transplant and goes all the way to Stockholm to trace the original donor. Kiran Rao, who presented Gandhi's first film, will be collaborating on this project too. She will not only present the film, but will also be a creative consultant on it.

Other than Sohum, Gandhi has retained his technicians and producers from SoT, including the director of photography, Pankaj Kumar.

Unlike Ship of Theseus which was heavy on philosophy and dealt with questions of existence and identity, Gandhi's new film will be relatively light-hearted. It will focus on relationships and emotions of the characters.

When contacted, Gandhi confirmed the story saying, "Although this time I will stay away from having a philosophical discourse, the grammar of my filmmaking will be evident. I'm still writing the script and developing the characters."

Said Sohum who plays the lead, "I'm thrilled to work with Gandhi again. From Anurag Kashyap to Anil Kapoor, everybody has appreciated my performance. I couldn't ask for a better second film."

Budgeted at Rs. 8 crore, the yetuntitled film's cast is yet to be finalised and the project is likely to go on floors later this year.
Has teamed up with Ship of Theseus actor Sohum Shah for a film budgeted at Rs 8 crore.

Riding high on the accolades he's gathering for Ship of Theseus, Anand Gandhi is working on two films simultaneously at the moment. One of them, as we've learnt, is a relationship drama, which will feature Sohum Shah in the lead.
