Late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman's apartment is 'littered' with drugs
According to sources 70 bags of heroin, at least 50 of which were unopened, were found in Philip Seymour Hpoffman's apartment -- some with an 'Ace of Hearts' stamp, which police say they haven't seen in New York City since 2012. Investigators also found about 20 hypodermic needles and five prescription drugs, including one used by heroin addicts to help kick a habit.
Police investigating the death of the 46-year-old actor had earlier said they found 50 bags of the narcotic but they increased the figures later.
Detectives are using the stamps on the bags and checking with nearby jurisdictions to track the origin of the heroin. They are also trying to determine the purity of the heroin and whether there were any additives.
Police is also investigating whether Hoffman's stint in rehab this May affected his tolerance for the drug.
The actor was found unconscious at around 11:15 am Sunday on the bathroom floor of his apartment by friend and screenwriter David Bar Katz, who called 911. Hoffman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Oscar-winner was supposed to pick up his three children on Sunday but he failed to show up. He was last seen alive at 8 pm on Saturday night. The cause of death would be known only after an autospy.
Police believe he may have died as a result of injecting a lethal mix of heroin laced with fentanyl, which is an opiate used to ease the pain of cancer patients.
According to officials, detectives found at least eight empty bags stamped with Ace of Spades and Ace of Hearts inside the actor's Manhattan apartment. These bags have been found to contain heroin mixed with fentanyl.
More than 100 people are believed to have been killed by heroin-fentanyl overdoses in the US in recent months.
Friends said the dad-of-three's relapse into drug addiction followed the breakdown of his 12-year relationship with costume designer Mimi O'Donnell, 45. It is believed that Hoffman had been spending £6,000 a month on heroin.
