The lead singer of U2, Bono, has admitted that the band is "on the verge of irrelevance" as work continues on their latest album.
The stadium rockers hope to finish their yet-untitled 13th record within the next couple of months, but the front man suggested time could be running out on their run as a global musical force.
Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Bono was asked whether it was difficult to stay important to the public.
He candidly responded: "We're on the verge of irrelevance. You have to make stuff relevant to you and where you're at, make an honest account of what you're going through.
"If that's relevant to other people, great. But we don't know."
After suggesting uncertainty about how the band - who released a new song at the Super Bowl to raise money for the fight against AIDS - will continue to connect in the future, he admitted their next album will take them back to their roots.
He explained: "We went back to why we wanted to be in a band in the first place.
"We were listening to Ramones and Kraftwerk - you can hear about on Invisble. It opened up a whole new valve for mein writing, it was like a dam-burst of sorts."
